Meditation Techniques

There are many ways to practice meditation. The simplest meditation style to learn is to sit comfortably straight and quiet with your eyes closed and focus your attention on the breath–inhalation, exhalation, inhalation.

Allow the thoughts that pass through your mind to do just that … pass through. Quite often that is the most difficult part of meditating, as we are all prone to a bit of obsessing over a problem or a situation.

When your attention wanders, as it invariably will, meditators are instructed to gently bring their attention back to the breath. Forcing the mind to be still only results in frustration.

Choosing a meditation method is much like choosing a form of yoga or selecting a teacher. It depends on how compatible that practice is with your lifestyle and belief system. It is an important decision and should be made with care. Regardless of the the chosen method, meditation requires practice and most of all patience. As it is with perfecting your yoga postures, so it is with meditation … it is a life long endeavor.

Here are a few Meditation Poses you may want to try:

Corpse Pose

Hatha yoga students are most often introduced to meditation through Corpse Pose, this pose brings about deep relaxation.

Full Lotus Pose

The Full Lotus Posture is an excellent pose for opening up the hips and giving flexibility to the ankles and knees. In women it alleviates menstrual discomfort and sciatica and helps ease childbirth.
